Rituals in Life + Design

In this week’s Reflection, I discuss the importance of rituals and more specifically how my morning ritual of greeting the day shapes such a meaningful part of my life.

My love of art and fashion have also been wonderful outlets that enhance my life in exponential ways. Ironically, I appreciate many of the same qualities in fashion as I do in art that I love. I value quality over quantity, I admire pieces that stand the test of time and transcend trends. Most of all, I respect when I can see layers of thought, metaphor and craftsmanship in a body of work.

I suspect this is why I was so drawn to Francesco Risso’s collections for Marni. Risso infuses his passion for originality, ritual and imagination in all that he does, even in his living space. In a frenzy of creativity during the lockdown of the pandemic “basically I painted every wall of my house, I was painting curtains!”

He also wore a tailcoat inherited from his grandfather 2 years in a row during his collection’s runway show. “It has multiple lives in it,” he says. “Personally, it gives me strength in a moment where the world seems so scattered and so divided. And so difficult to live in.”

I think about all of this when I wear the distressed-effect single-breasted blazer that he created for Marni and I can see how his philosophy informs the beauty of his designs.

I layered a white Hanes t-shirt under this jacket with a pair of yellow/gold multi Palma snake patterned Jyothi Coated Jean from L’Agence, leather color block lace up boots from Moncler and a calf leather and studded Lona Belt from Isabel Marant.

Speaking of authenticity and talent, the necklace I am wearing is made by Ana Hagopian a designer from Barcelona who fuses color, shape and texture in her collections. Ana says that her main source of inspiration is nature “and its infinite creations, its limitless colours, its surprising textures”. Like nature her necklace is one-of-a-kind and beautifully compliments everything I wear it with.

How do you infuse ritual in your daily life?
